Novel: Finding Audrey
Author: Sophie Kinsella
Published: June 4th, 2015
Finding Audrey is a story following a fourteen year old girl named Audrey who suffers from an anxiety disorder. Ever since the terrible incident occurred at school, Audrey has been left feeling like a failure because of her anxious compulsions that result in her being unable to leave the house, or take off her sunglasses around strangers. Dr. Sarah, Audrey’s psychologist has been helping her make progress, but it has been slow. Audrey fears that she will never get back to normal until one day she meets this boy named Linus. Linus is Franks (Audrey’s brother) gaming partner, and he is able to help Audrey overcome her fear of leaving the house by giving Audrey challenges to complete. Linus and Audrey form a connection from the first time they met and each one helps the other become a better individual.
Who was my favourite character and why?
Frank was my favourite character because of his sense of humor and interesting relationship with his mother. Frank plays video games frequently, but one day his mother reads an article in the daily mail stating that video games are detrimental to a teenagers development, Anne, Frank’s mother, bans video games indefinitely. Frank was infuriated, but his witty comments are what made the interaction humorous.
Were the characters relatable and/or believable?
Although Audrey’s situation was different than that of most people, the connection between Audrey and her family seemed real, and genuine. The character’s interacted well together and were relatable at some points throughout the novel.
Did the story keep you on the edge of your seat?
Although this was not an action novel, I was hard to put this book down. I was craving to know what happened next, and inevitably this novel became a page turner for me.
Something I would change about the novel?
I would have loved to know more about Audrey’s back story and what exactly happened to her at school that caused her so much trouble, and anxiety. A back story would have given our main character more depth, but other than that, I enjoyed Sophie Kinsella’s writing style.
If you enjoyed this novel, you should definitely read the other novel’s in Kinsella’s collection. Although I have not read them all, another favourite novel of hers is Can You See Me?. I may be bias since the main character’s name is Emma, but the story is great.
Overall, I found that this novel was able to portray someones ability to overcome hardship in a wonderfully and inspiring way. I found that the character’s meshed well together and the humor in this novel was witty and comical. If you are sitting by the pool this summer, be sure to pick this one up! I would give this book 4 out of 5 tea mugs, see my rating system here.
