Novel: In The Unlikely Event
Author: Judy Blume
Published: June 2nd, 2015
Is it a coincidence that three tragedies hit the town of Elizabeth, New Jersey one after the other? Our main character, a fifteen year old girl named Miri Ammerman does not think so. In fact, most of the boys at her school are convinced aliens have something to do with the plane crashes that hit Elizabeth in quick succession. Almost forty years later, Miri returns home to Elizabeth to honor the lives that were lost from the three plane crashes that terrible year, and is able to reconnect with those from her small town that she had lost touch with.
Judy Blume has done it again! She takes the reader on a vivid ride through catastrophe, love, heart break, friendship, and the power of family.
Who was my favourite character and why?
Irene, Miri’s grandmother, was my favourite character, because she had a good sense of humour, and added another generation and complexity to the book.
Were the characters relatable and/or believable?
Absolutely! Although this book was sent back in the 50’s at the beginning of the novel, the character are well developed, have a great back story and a definitely relatable.
Did the story keep you on the edge of your seat?
This story was a page tuner! There was such a large number of characters, back stories, and connections between characters that this book was difficult to put down!
Something I would change about the novel?
Nothing I loved it! Just keep in mind that you have to be alert when starting this novel because there are an abundant amount of characters introduced in the first 50 or so pages. 🙂
I would give this novel 4 out of 5 tea mugs, a must read summer novel!
