A Colouring Book For Adults?

Recently, there has been a frenzy over colouring books, but not just any colouring books, colouring books geared specifically towards adults. The top rated book on Amazon in 2015 was a colouring book, which is pretty incredible considering the number of great novels that came out last year. What’s the big deal you might ask? Kids have been colouring for as long as anyone can remember. Well, this time the adults have the chance to give it a try.

This trend has sparked a curiosity in me about the “calming” and “beneficial” effects of  time that people spend colouring, therefore I thought the only way to find out it this were the case was to put it to the test.

I present… (drum roll please!)

Discussion

Adult colourist’s claim that colouring help relieve anxiety, stress, and promotes mental clarity. They even state that their worries can be pushed aside with the help of colouring, and they are able to focus on tasks other than their stress.

Psychologists have confirmed that adult colouring is a positive method of stress relief, as it is able to take adults away from the stresses of everyday life, and bring them back to their childhood which was a much simpler, and less stressful time for most.

One of the most beneficial uses of colouring books is to help adults with poor sleeping habits. In this tech savvy world that we inhabit, people are on their phones from the minute their alarm goes off, to the minute their head hits their pillow at night. Don’t get me wrong, technology is great however, the light that is emitted from phones, laptops and computers is very bright, and it sends a signal to our brain alerting them that it is time to be awake. This leads to problems when technology is used before bedtime, as our brains get confused and out sleeping schedules become erratic.

The solution? Why colouring books of course! Most of us are on out phones or other technological devices at night for entertainment purposes which is great, except for the fact that it could lead to poor sleeping habits. Instead of spending the time before bed on technological devices, spending as little as five minutes colouring can put people in a calm state of mind, and have them sleeping like babies in no time.

I’m no artist, but here is my attempt at being artistic.

Overall, I enjoyed the time I spent testing out this colouring book, however I’m not sure that I would call myself a colourist just yet.

Review:

Overall, I would give this colouring book 3 out of 5 tea mugs.

  2. I tried and reviewed Johanna Basford’s Secret Garden colouring book when it first came out and it was quite calming and stress-relieving to just sit there and colour… I could do it in front of the TV too. I should have another go at it really.
