Martyn Bedford is the author of the award-winning novel Flip as well as Never Ending. Along with these young adult novels, Bedford has written numerous adult novels including; The Houdini Girl, Black Cat, and Acts of Revision. Martyn Bedford lives in England with his family and is currently a professor at the Leeds Trinity University.

Synopsis:

Gloria is your average teenage girl; she sticks to the rules and has a pretty unadventurous life; that is until Uman comes along. Uman is intelligent, confident and bent on breaking all the rules. Gloria is reading to step outside her comfort zone and lead a more daring life. Unfortunately, by the time Gloria finds out who Uman truly is, she is a long way from home.

Who was my favourite character and why?

At first, I enjoyed Uman’s character the most because he was mysterious and had a great (although traumatic) backstory. Despite his misfortunes, he was able to rebuild his life and start over. That is until he met Gloria and decided to run away with her. At that point in the novel, I found it difficult to like the person Uman was becoming.

Did the story keep you on the edge of your seat?

The title of this novel is called Twenty Questions for Gloria and each chapter in the novel is a question directed for Gloria.  Going into this novel, I thought it was going to be an intensely gripping thriller similar to a Stephen King novel. Unfortunately, I was left wanting more of the psychological thriller aspect that keeps the novel enticing.

Something I would change about the novel?

As I mentioned above, I would have enjoyed seeing a more suspense in this novel.

Overall, I would give this novel 3 out of 5 tea mugs; a well-written novel!
